You'd be in the mix for the 500m as things stand, surely? I mean, not to win it but to be in the pack.

And you're only going to get faster if you start focusing on rowing.

I was finally going to get back to it today but...well, I didn't. I started a warm up then realised the room was too hot for me to carry on. Tomorrow, then!

First time I've ever been on the rowing machine for ten minutes, did 2,135 metres.

Stupid question, if you change resistance does that effect how far you 'row'? On a static bike, there seems to be a relationship between power (watts) and distance.

Muttley, I have a LOT of rowing planned for tomorrow. After I've opened the bedroom window first (it's below freezing here but these flats have ridiculous good insulation!)

5km_is_plenty, short answer yes, you'll go further at a higher resistance (like gears on a bike) but there's not point yanking it up to the highest - see how it feels in the middle.

I tend to go for the longer distances when rowing. I doubt I am competitive but are there competitions for longer distances?

No, 5km. The distance is decided by how much power you put into your drive (pull) and how long your drive (pull) for. It's a bit complicated but the fan (I'm assuming you're on a Concept2 rower) isn't' exactly resistance. Its "drag factor".

Think of it like the way it would feel in a boat. If you're on your own in a single scull you'd have a lot of work to do on your own and that's like having the fan set at a 10. On the other extreme if you're in an Eight (with 7 crewmates contributing to the speed) you're still going to pull just as hard but you're going to feel like the boat is moving faster, and that's more like a 1.

But the monitor compensates and balances that out so everyone gets the same score for the same work.
