Without going into too much detail, Muttley, that's my biggest issue in the mornings. I generally have to make a return visit after whatever morning workout I've done even after "increasing my power to weight ratio" beforehand.

Anyway, enough of that. 2 x 12 minutes r20 for a UT1 session this morning. THese are feeling quite comfortable now. I guess as the volume increases that might change a bit. Hoping to be able to fit in at least 45 minutes of UT2 tomorrow as well if I can.

Lots of great rowing going on here. Good to read all about it. My 2k plan had the weekly top-tier piece this morning. A full-fat 8 x 2min intervals at 2k pace, and with huge 3min30s rests, so no excuses to not give 100%. It went well! Not only a fair bit up from 2k pace, and pleased to be able to push each interval a little bit more than the previous one, ending up with a 1:43.8 pace average. ![]() |

Royal flush splits! Nice one, mate, and that’s looking great for hitting 7 minutes.

Dragged myself through session 4 of the week today after my run this morning. Knocked out 3 x 17 minutes @ r18, nice and easy pace and effort but getting the metres done. Glad to keep the streak going of completing every planned session of 2023 so far.

Have just seen that James Cracknell is having a, um, crack at the 50-59 British marathon record on Friday. He holds the 40-49 record (2:30:37). The 50-59 record is 2:34:02.8 at the moment.

I know some you you guys have tried a marathon row and I admire your perseverence but I can't imagine much that's worse (bar possibly running one these days!). Good look to Crackers. I hop ehe does it and I'd guess he's fairly confident he will if he's publicising the attempt. I've raced James Cracknell. Well, I say raced. He ran the Royal Parks Half the same year as me and I saw him a few times going the other way. Oh, and he definitely won. |

Oh, and 4 x 3 minutes @ r28 with 3 minute rests tonight. Not as hard as I expected it to be. Averaged about 1:51.5 across the 4 pieces and did a royal flush (each rep faster than the last) which is always nice.

Very nice indeed, Nellers and Andy. And excellent paces as well. I calculate a marathon in 2.5 hours to be 1:46/500m or thereabouts. Yikes! Just 30 minutes at UT1 this morning. Fractionally quicker than the last time I did this so pleased with that. |

Thanks Nellers and Muttley and well done on your royal flush/pace improvements too. I've struggled with pace since that big session, but I guess that's the idea of the Pete Plan sessions used by the Rowalong 2k plan. I'm now really aware of the weekly structure of: easy - medium - easy - tough - easy - recovery/medium --- rest & repeat That sounds interesting sallykate - it's a crazy pace to maitain for that long. I tried three marathons - one to simply get through the distance (ouch), one to beat 3 hours (more ouch), and one to improve (to 2:57, huge effort for very little reward and major ouch). As for what's worse? I did a 50k a year ago and that was tough - still harbouring plans for a 100k at "whatever" pace when I have a spare day with lousy weather. I've started sticking some random Gym music from spotify in the background to go with the Rowalong videos, which I like better (provided I get the sound balance right). An easy 30 minutes at 20spm for my w2s1 this morning, watching the blacker than black sky turn lighter and pink and then cloudy. A good start to the day. |
