I got that wrong above - that setting is for the amount of days over which VO2Max is averaged.

At the end of parkrun this morning my watch said new max hr detected 183bpm (12 above what I consider to be my max) and reset it. But the max recorded on the activity is 164! How does that happen?

What's your fitness age on the Garmin? I guessed that it was doing something like that some time ago.

The other option is it can estimate based on HRV.

Not seen any documentation on how it detects Max HR though.

I asked a similar question here and there was a discussion for a few pages. My watch initially detected Max HR matched the Garmin formula I found for it but then it edged up from there (to 195 IIRC). I reset it to 200 at some point and it has edged back down to be currently 196.

Would be nice to have a definitive answer to how it's working.

I'm not sure how it's calculated but according to Garmin my "Fitness Age" is 47.5. It gives me this message.... "Way to go! You've reached your achievable Fitness Age." So I'll take that as OK.

I turned the Max HR detection off in my F6 because it kept looking at relatively easy runs and deciding it was about 20bpm lower than it actually is. It is very high by the age related rules of thumb but they’re pretty conservative.

I would like to switch off the auto detect feature for max HR. When my HRM has an off day with crazy readings 200+ which then messes up my HR zones even though I have set them to LTHR. I don't understand why Garmin is doing that. Where can I disable auto detect? I haven't found it in HR settings. I have a 745.

Thanks, StuH, the 745 is like the Fenix 6. I found it in physiological metrics. I looked in HR zones but it's not there - newer watches have it there.
