That would seem like an unusual way to do it. We'll invest all this server bandwidth in giving you the data, but if you don't pay, you can't use it. I hope you get lucky and it's free :-)

Are you sure it's the topoactive maps it's downloading and not just the courseview golf maps?
My Fenix 6 has global courseview but only Europe topoactive.

To check which maps you have:

Hold MENU, select Activities & Apps, select an activity, select the activity settings, and select Map.

You should see a list of the map products installed, and if they are active for that activity type or not.

StuH/Sam, thanks. It’s downloading Global CourseView. Hadn’t realised that was golf courses (I don’t play golf…) so I’ve stopped the download as I don’t require that.

Sam, it’s currently got Worldwide basemap, TopoActive Europe North East, TopoActive Europe South West and Ski Map.

So I think I need TopoActive North America for my travels.

Hi all, sorry if this is a basic question but if I want turn by turn functionality, do I need the topo maps? If I didn’t buy anything and just plotted a route in advance and used the base map, what would the navigation be like? I’ll just be in cities so I won’t be out in the middle of nowhere.

I dunno, but maybe you could test it before travelling by making a route in GC for where you live and turn off the topo map before you go out to run it.

Thanks both.

Steve, I’ll try that on my next run.

You should be able to use a track anywhere as it's just a set of datapoints and it will provide route tracking and turn alerts if they are set in the gps file. What you won't get is turn-by-turn based on the underlying mapping data.

Thanks. I tried it today and it’ll be ok for my purposes in the US I think. It told me when I was off course he told me to turn left/right, so it should be fine for me.
