My experience of Garmin refurbs has been variable - if you get a good one, great. But if you get a bad one, expect a world of aggravation. They say they replace the battery, but I had 3 or 4 consecutive refurbs with duff batteries. You then have to fight with Garmin service to get the bad one replaced.

My wife's experience was very similar.

Ok, so it's come down to a straight choice.

45 Plus @ £130 or 55 @ £150.

Is the 55 worth the extra £20?

Decisions, decisions...

According to DCR, the 55 is basically a mini 245 so that sounds like good value assuming there's no deals that bring the 245 down to that level (unlikely).

I read the DCR review on the 55 earlier. That's what's got me thinking.

Unfortunately he's not done a 45 Plus review (only the base 45) so I can't do a direct comparison.

In the end, most of what I'll be doing is using it to record distance and time, so it's whether the extra features will actually be useful to me.

I do think there's an awful lot of features that are pretty pointless....

I’d get the 55 as it’s latest generation so will get more updates.

I have the 235, technically, but I have put the blasted thing down somewhere and can't find it 😳

The battery life on the 55 is quite a lot higher. Fewer charge cycles means that the battery capacity won’t degrade as quickly, so you could be using it for longer before needing to replace it, which I know is important to you.

I'm guessing that the fact there's no real reviews of the 45 plus means it's not much of an upgrade over the 45.

Sure the 45 plus is decent but every new model up will improve on the previous model and for £20 more you get updates that probably widen the gap. Possible you won't need the updates but the saving doesn't seem enough to go for previous gen tech.
