Garmin for swimming question.

Does the watch use the pool length you put in to work out the distance or GPS?

I'm at a hotel where the pool is only 15 metres long. The garmin will only let me put in 17 metres smallest pool length.

After the swim it said I swam 1150 (or so) metres. That seems quite fast for me ( 23 minutes). I'm assuming it's used the 17 metres and calculated the distance using that and when I turned at each end, therefore over stating the distance I actually swam.

Is that correct?

Ta.

I * believe * it's pool length Nick, I have similar issues as my regular pool is 30 meters in length and it seems to upset Garmin Connect. I was doing some kickboard work last night and noticed that the device recorded it as "rest" when I was actually chuffing my arse off, hamstrings screaming. It clearly works on the basis of the accelerometer measuring stroke cadence and the defined distance.

New software update roll-out for fenix series…. This is my first garmin update, do you guys know how long it usually takes and if you get a notification on the app (iOS)?

I dont really use a laptop to get through it via express and would like to avoid using my mac for it since i have not switched it on for months

Usually about a week to roll out to everyone. Takes a bit longer if you're leaving it to the phone, as it takes a couple of days to decide you're not going to sync via computer or WiFi, then trickles the file slowly over to the watch from the phone by Bluetooth

You'll get a notification on the watch when it's ready to install.

wifi is pretty quick to download when it's rolled out to you. Enjoy the update!

You'll have to explicitly connect to wifi to get it to check though. Either by doing it manually or at the end of an activity not have the watch able to detect the phone, as then it tries to upload by wifi.

Why using wifi isn't the default (or a preference) makes no sense to me as it's far quicker.

Thanks Badger…. I guess technically WiFi is also an option, since it is able to connect when I’m at home
