If you are worried then swim in a lake that's NOWCA affiliated or similar. They will close if water quality compromised.

I'm sticking with the pool (for now at least) and got another "Goldilocks" 2.1km done this morning. I'm past Fort Augustus (Checkpoint 5) and I'm into the canal. Get the kettle on (in about a month) Sushi.

I have had a search for OWS in my area. Will keep you posted! Thanks all. It was in the pool for me yesterday and today. Today was lovely! Very quiet at 7:15 and managed 90 lengths. Yesterday less so, I started getting a little cramp (came straight from running the line at my sons football and had played golf the day before and been on feet rest of day) Got out 15 mins earlier than planned, today the legs felt fine!# Anyone esle get cramp, what is the normal cause?? I may have not drunk enough that day. |

Good work Daz! I haven't had cramp in the pool but I've started taking a bottle and drinking a bit as I go, and do generally feel a bit better for it through the session. I don't get out as ravenous as I used to either! Pool for me too this morning, 2200m which I think might be my longest pool swim Although I should have done a few more lengths as I'm only 0.2 of a mile away from the next challenge checkpoint! |

Cramp is weird and very hard to study scientifically. Tends to be related to fatigue and dehydration but not always and not consistently. There's a lot of poor quality research that's been done that identifies it as a lack of salts causing the cramping, so add that to the mix. In general if there's one cause and cure for a problem it's right but if there are loads then likely none of them are. I've had cramps only rarely in the pool but, coincidentally, I did have cramp last week. I'd done a bike and a row the day before and hadn't drunk enough so a combination of fatigue and dehydration meant that pushing off the wall on turns was cramping my quads momentarily. I just didn't push off so hard when the cramps started and it was bearable until the end of the session. First time I've had that specific problem. It's more normally calf cramps which is made worse I think (for runners) in that you're pointing your toes for an extended period which is not something you're generally training your calf muscles to do when you run. |

Yeah I get those calf cramps occasionally but not too bad. Mostly I just drag my feet like a massive sea anchor.
