I've popped back in here because I notice that I'm cluttering again. It's annoying me now.

Helegant says it.

It's not about the decluttering (well, it is, of course).

It's about not cluttering - stopping buying stuff that's not needed.

Otherwise it just goes round in circles.

Yes absolutely right. I'm trying to get better at that, but have 3 small children. Although compared to their friends they have far less toys and things and that's a good thing.

My house is reaching a critical stage of almost being too cluttered to declutter, if that makes sense. I need the kids to be away for a couple of weeks to go through all their stuff, to get rid of the toys they have forgotten about, because if they are there, they see it, and it's no longer forgotten.

I also need my husband to put things away occasionally, and not just leave them in the most convenient place (and then spend ages looking for them, because he's put something else on top of them).

I'm drowning......

Expecting a friend to come round later to relieve me of a mountain of towels.

I have just shredded years worth of car insurance policy documents... no idea why I still had them, aside from it was one of those jobs I never got round to tackling...

Nessie, I know what you mean. I don't know how old your kids are, but when mine were younger I'd go through a drawer / cupboard when they were at a friend's or at school/ nursery. Now they are older, they are better at throwing their own stuff out. If that's not possible, start with your own stuff. Even doing a bit gives you a boost and the energy to think about the next bit.

Having said that, it is really hard!

They are 10 and 7, WA. 10 is the worst - she has a great memory and is very sentimental......

I work 4 days a week, so only have Wednesday when they are at school to catch up on all the housework that we can't fit in during the week (activities *every* sodding night, and weekends too) so very little time for meaningful decluttering. I did try the "5 things a day" of my own stuff, even if a "thing" was an empty shampoo bottle, but event that has fallen by the wayside.

I like the 5 things a day idea. This morning I took all the tetrapak cartons to the tip, some books to the book cycle place, and at some point in the next few days I'm passing on the playhouse that's been dismantled in the garage for 2 years!

".... This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day."
