It’s not big enough for anything but a bit of storage and will be staying empty

The only things allowed in my loft are things used at least once a year. Suitcases, ski gear and Christmas decks, mainly.

I have a Christmas tree we haven’t used in years (think I will declutter it actually) and children’s books I can’t bear to part with. It’s a tiny space though and I’m scared of heights so going up there isn’t enticing :)

And as if by magic my facebook memories brought up photos of my loft before I started decluttering it last year.

I think children’s books are ok to keep. I still have some of my mum’s.

I think the problem with lofts is when you find something you don’t really need any more, but don’t want to throw away, so it goes in the loft. Then it’s out of sight and you forget you ever had it.

I would only have Christmas decorations, suitcases and camping stuff up there if it were up to me, and maybe a small box each of kids stuff.
However I live with three people who are pathologically incapable of throwing anything away ("but it meeeeeeans something to me") yet unable to find room for it in normal living space.

Therefore it's full of crap.

that seems fair enough Carp. Just leave it up there till it goes mouldy and then they can chuck it out.
Some of the children's books were actually mine and I loved reading them to my kids and look forward to reading them to my grandkids if any ever eventuate. I only keep books I think won't be easily available in future, some classics will probably be around forever.

My mum lived in her house for 34 years and the only things in her loft when we cleared it out were the box from her TV and a single boxing glove that was there when we moved in.

I cleared out my desk at uni today, my new desk has a lot less storage and is a lot smaller. I chucked out lots of stuff but have another 3 bags to go through...

Help advice and support for declutterers

Special May Challenge

".... This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day."
