In the village House Sparrows are surprisingly rare here too. One colony at the far end but nothing else. As the village has become completely residential and the old farm houses and barns have been renovated/converted in the last 30-40 years all the nooks and crannies they need to nest have largely disappeared (as a kid our 60's suburban house always had House Sparrows nesting under the eaves but modern building techniques have got too good at sealing all the little gaps). Across at the Res Visitor Centre they have created a House Sparrow 'hotel'. Lots of side by side nest boxes under the roof edge that provide just what they need artificially and there is a thriving colony which is great to see. The world would definitely be a sadder place without House Sparrows.

One of, if not the world’s commonest bird. A chirpy sparrow has cheered me up many times in the past when away from home 🤎

We have loads of house sparrows here. They mainly seem to live on the other side of the road (in spring/summer you could see them coming in and out from under the eaves of the house opposite constantly) but descend in crowds on our bird feeder at regular intervals.

Nice photos um. It's always interesting when you look closely at birds like Sparrows that rarely get a second glance how interesting their plummage actually is, they are from a bland uniform brown.

Went to view a flat yesterday. Walking up the street I saw 2 big, chattering flocks of goldfinches in trees. There were also a couple of flocks of v active crows overhead and a big flock of gulls. It's a green area of the city on the outskirts with a river and close to the mouth of the estuary. Happily my offer was accepted on the flat and fingers crossed it all goes through. I'm looking forward to joining/setting-up a bird-watching group.

Thanks Adrian. I'm really looking forward to being somewhere more birdy. I'll be very surprised if there isn't a local bird group, although I will have to wait until we can do group stuff.
