Sometimes I have to take a step back and stop to wonder at what I come to take for granted - red kite soaring over my garden the other day a case in point. I was running on my regular route today and there was a great white egret at the side of the lake, which I took a brief look at before carrying on. My partner had seen it a couple of days before when she was out running there, so I wasn't surprised. But then I thought "IT'S A GREAT WHITE EGRET! THAT'S CRAZY!"

On a completely different topic, yesterday I was cleaning out an area at the side of the house where we put bikes, above which feral pigeons have unfortunately taken to roosting and completely covering the tarpaulin we have over the bikes with shit. There was an old bike at the back with its own cover over it, and as I lifted it to move it to the back of the shed, I was puzzled by what seemed to be a rather heavy ball of leaves which part of the cover was wrapped around, and then as I moved it, a tightly coiled up hedgehog, obviously hibernating, rolled out. I quickly covered in the leaves again, and then put some bits of bamboo debris in place on top to keep the leaves in place, and then later on I put an Ikea bag full of bubble wrap on top to provide some insulation. I hope I haven't disturbed its hibernation too much and it's was able to get back to sleep soon, and was able to stay as warm as before. I felt very guilty.

Singing dipper I guess 200 yards from home this evening. Well he was singing when I walked out with the dog, but ‘flying underwater’ on our way back

Lovely @J2R. I bet it’ll be ok. And I’m with you on the wow factor of certain species. When I was a kid it was a massive novelty to go to Wales on hols and see a buzzard. I’d heard of Kites, never dreamt of seeing one or a peregrine. See them all over now.

Never see a sparrow or a chaffinch any more though :-(

Yes, buzzards were a species of the west country or Scotland for me, and always exciting to see, and until recently you never saw them in Norfolk. Now we have them soaring over our city garden!

As I've mentioned before here, sparrows are completely unheard of in our garden (maybe 2 sightings in 15 years), but chirping away only a couple of hundred metres up the street. Chaffinches are an oddity, as we only get the occasional one on our feeders now when they used to be very common. I would say we only get 5% of the numbers now. But greenfinch numbers are up.

Our chaffinches dont come on the feeders but the do hang about on the bit of lawn we have. There only appears to be one pair though. Them and the blackcaps we only see one pair. Everything else we see multiples or family groups of.

Two buzzards around today looking for dead things to eat 😂

Siskins is the thing we haven't seen much of this winter, we definitely had them the first year we were here all winter, but now they only seem to be here for a few weeks.

Red Squirrel
I saw 2 oyks today and 3 red squirrels. I shouldn’t take them for granted, but I also passed by our resident flock of wigeon in the distillery pool.

I didn't see a buzzard until I was 23. Now it's a rare day I don't see one, even from my garden. Little egrets - first one maybe 10 years ago, now most weeks. Oyks - all the time, I saw them every day in my way home from school (beside Belfast Lough) and still see them frequently. Goldfinch were a rare treat growing up, now incredibly common. It's a charming change 😅
