Yep same here too. Complete lack of preparation and forethought. 15 minutes isn't very long. At all. I had hydration sorted pretty well, but food, not so much. I think I burned about 5000 calories and consumed less than a thousand. All day. Company is good too - laps 3, 4 and 8 where I had a running buddy were definitely nicer than the rest. I also need to work out a better run/walk strategy. I 'ran' the first 8 laps and didn't introduce any walking until lap 9; I could probably have done a couple more like that, but I didn't want to risk hating it. And I had no aspirations to "win" it anyway (like all things running it was a challenge against my own limitations rather than anyone else). Introducing walks earlier might have made things easier = though they obviously eat into your 'recovery' time. I could do with actually training for the next one too - I doubt I've run more than 10 or 11 miles in one go since my marathon in early May. |

Rother Valley in Yorkshire is well worth a look. Campsite next to it. Camping available on the site too. Toilets, showers, cafe. The parkrun route is good, the actual loop of both lakes is 2.95 miles. Easy to add a dog leg to make it 5k to start and finish in the same place (Rother Valley relays do this)

Got my accommodation booked for next year and made sure it starts on Friday instead of Saturday. Having no fixed abode for part of the day was a big draw back. Might well do longer flaps next year as that wasn't my limiting factor.

I'd like to train to do more full yards - and start the first one on time rather than about 3-5 minutes late. At my pace, run-walking - refuelling on the go isn't a problem I should have stuck with more 2 milers when I got home rather than drop to 1s |

I would make sure I'd start at or near the head of the hour. I'd also make it that it was "the thing" I was doing that day and not just trying to work something in amongst other stuff I was doing. This would also let me start earlier. I'd also: be fitter; and not do my longest run for a bit two days before. |

I would probably correct the following things: - don't choose a distance on the day that I feel like doing and that might work with other things that I need to do. I thought I would just do the longest distance so I would be finished earlier and could do other things outside running - actually do some training, rather than 2-3 hours of running each week - sleep more than 5 hours the night before - commit to actually starting the event, rather than thinking maybe - not have to do laundry, feeding dogs, taking dogs out, in the limited time (15 minutes and less) between laps - prepare appropriate food and hydration, rather than ad hoc doing it between laps. I did have access to fridge and pantry so I hadn't planned anything. I had some of the leftovers from the night before Things I felt I did well, after learning during the process: - be mindful of finishing before the hour and diligently checking in (to the point of double and triple checking) - charge devices at my aid station as soon as the lap was checked in (watch, phone, ear buds) - charging some devices while on the run. This was awkward, sometimes charging phone and watch each with a separate power bank, though the time between laps wasn't enough to keep my things charged. I had ensured that my power banks were charged up the day before - vary where I run, keeping it as flat as possible - make sure that I get to my aid station before the needed distance is met and then going short distance up and down the street. This ensures no overages or having to make it to the aid station after stopping the run. I failed with my first lap being 7.0km instead of 6.71km - record each lap as an individual activity. In case of watch/phone going dead A lot of these wouldn't apply if I had chosen a shorter distance, so your mileage may vary. ๐ |

Things I enjoyed about the event: - allowance for different start times and distances - pushing myself to go out of my comfort zone and achieve something well outside my expectations - the camaraderie (though I was finished before a lot of it) |

I'm sticking with the mile - I'm never going to be fast enough over longer distances to cope with the shortened recovery gaps (IYSWIM). I don't think I drank enough - a regular issue for me - and I should have started *every* lap with a brisk walk instead of leaving it til mile 8 or 9. It was increasingly uncomfortable to get my knees working at the start of a lap. In fact I'm thinking I might alternate walk laps with run laps, because my target for next year will be 18 hours/laps. |
