Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

My EV van has an eco mode. Which I think should be called double eco given it's an EV.

Drive my 15miles to work this morning with 45milrs charge at the start. It was cold with snow but I nursed it in with more charge left than the system thought I would have.

A couple of years ago I'd be anxious about that trip but surprising how you quicky get used to the capability of your car and confident you get as to how driving style and other factors will impact a journey.

Eco modes on EVs are a bit of a con IMHO. From my last two cars the only things it appeared to do was a) change the throttle map to be a little more gentle on acceleration and b) make the car cold by turning down / off heating (and in the MG that part is a switch off-able option).

The basic physics says there can be very little difference in accelerating a car to a cruising speed through power delivery if the same driver with the same good / bad habits is at the helm. Yes, accelerating slower is more efficient to a small degree, but it really doesn't make as big a difference as an eco mode in a ICE can where fuel / oxygen ratios can be tweaked by the ECU and gear ratios in automatic ICE cars can be fiddled with.

If ECO mode limited top speed to 65 it would force some drivers to be more efficient, but if you always drive at 65mph on a motorway anyway then it makes zero difference (I don't think any ECO modes do this, do they?). And if you already are soft with the accelerator getting up to cruising speed, a throttle map that limits acceleration will also make zero difference.

My sister's diesel automatic has an eco mode that makes the car hesitate slightly before changing! It makes me feel sick as a passenger, and frustrates me as a driver! Obviously the power chain in an automatic is a lot more direct (and smoother!), so Eco mode doesn't have much to play with really.

Basic simple dynamics, and ancillary systems!

Well… collect the Volvo this morning 🥰🥰 a few issues getting the infotainment system set up but once the tech guy came out and showed us all (including the sales person) how to do the reset it was all good … drove to local ish place for lunch .. it told us what % we’d have on arrival etc and it was spot on, customer service from Volvo was excellent … so far so good.

Charging box survey chap coming in an hour or so and will fit the box next week so I will need to do a charge on a public charger somewhere inbetween which might well be McArthur Glen on Sunday afternoon / teatime and play with a Tesla Supercharger 👍

You’ve really got yourself an excellent car there @Gromit, particularly now you’ve got the main screen reset down to a tee!! Enjoy it 😀.

You know you can talk to it too, don’t you? ‘Hey Google’ is a bit crap but very useful!!

Hi @Windsor Wool yes I love it …. The “google” chat was being used yesterday when we played on the drive when we got home 😂😂 I’d hoped the charging box would have been a simple enough fit from electricity supply in our garage however it’s old enough to not have enough … so we’ll be needing to have a new supply run down from the side of the house down to the garage, chap assured us it’s no big deal and it does mean it will all be on one new fuse outside the house and won’t now risk tripping the electric garage door 😜😂😂😂

First but of annoyance this afternoon, we aren’t getting our wall charger fitted until Thursday so I wanted to have a play with the fast chargers at our local supermarket , 1 car already plugged in and the next but 1 parking bay had parked sufficiently across the white line there was no way I was gong to be able to get it it the space… even if I wasn’t being precious about damage to the car 🤬🤬 so we drove to the local big car park which were not fast chargers just to have a play at plugging in …. I don’t need to charge until Tuesday night so I’ll get down to the fast chargers early evening then and do a food shop at the same time.

Obvs this won’t be an issue after Thursday
