Mrs Axe had a call from the hospital yesterday. It seems they have decided MiL doesnt have capacity to assess risks of falls. Something we have known for quite a number of years.

They asked for thoughts on whether going home or into care home was best and I think want the family to decide. It seems both Mrs A and her brother have independently given the same answer - she isnt safe at home. Next steps seems to be a social worker being in touch. BiL we have learned is now away for the best part of 3 weeks and this feels like something that cant be dealt with by text/e-mail

Oddly all talk of bladder cancer and weeks to live seem to have been forgotten

Glad to hear it's sorting itself out, albeit slowly.

The way she was written off is rather disturbing, however. Some similarity with FiL's case.

My mum has been rather disappointed after her cancer diagnosis and prognosis (no treatment, because she's too old effectively) to have had no further follow up at all. She felt as jda describes above, rather "written off". I can understand that the NHS has no spare bandwidth for attending to people who they can't treat or help, but still feels like a periodic follow up might have been worth putting in the diary at least e.g. a scan at 6 months or a year, just to give her info on the growth of the tumours? Dunno, perhaps that's a luxury the NHS just can't afford?

Glad to hear things are clarifying and stabilising for your MiL Bazo.

I remember my poor old Mum got a phone call on New Year’s eve, at around 6pm, about her cancer diagnoses, and she was gone by the time the next New Year’s Eve came around :(

I think its' quite variable. When Dad got his terminal diagnosis, a whole apparatus sprung into life and we felt very supported indeed. I'm sorry it's not the same for others.

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
