The way I see it it's pretty much a rounding error on the value of the estate so <shrug>

We ended up paying £8k to the co op for my dad’s estate, plus another £8k for the sale of the house. I wasn’t an executor and neither of my sisters (who were) felt able to cope with it.

Coop was about £5k for dad's wife and will be about the same no doubt to set up the trust

We did the probate online for dad and had a couple of estate agents round for a quote for the house as mum was considering selling. The cost of a move put her off thankfully as she didn’t need that stress on top of the bereavement.

Had the AP's house valued yesterday: for twice what they paid in 2004! A perfect retirement property is coming to market but not on yet, so the agent will keep us in mind and just need dad to relax - he doesn't want the upheaval & having to think about getting rid of stuff. I'm sure it's the right thing to do (need to release funds to live on & pay for more help, plus their house is too big), but equally have concerns about their health. Dad fell over putting his cup in the dishwasher...

“Final” visit to FiL’s house yesterday prior to the commercial clearance. My wife finally plucked up the courage to go into the loft so we came back with another heap of old tat - but it’s her old tat that her parents had stashed there 20y ago :-)

Also emptied the freezer that had been sitting there unplugged for a couple of months. That was delightful.

Dad’s funeral went well yesterday. A good turnout, lots of nice stories and the service went really well. A decent number came back to the cricket club for some nibbles, so it went as well as can be expected’

JDA, I poked my head up in the loft the other day and there’s loads of Lego from probably 40 years ago up there, still in boxes. I was expecting to see a Millennium Falcon, but I think that was probably disposed of at some point.

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
