Glad to hear it went well Big_G. I’ve come to realise that I enjoy a good funeral actually.

FiL's house has been cleared, 3 days with 4 men, 16 van-loads of stuff to the tip, plus three trailers-full of assorted timber.

My wife had mentioned a couple of items as yet unfound that she was interested in seeing, and sure enough they turned up (in the loft space), which was nice. And we won't have to go back there much now, so maybe she can start to think of the place as it was, rather than as it is!

What was the timber? Random esoteric pieces of wood kept “just in case they come in handy”

Sounds like my dads garage!

Sounds like my dad’s place too. Why do they persist in lugging it up into the loft as well ?

We're slowly getting our ducks in a row. Order skip at the end of next week to be delivered the following Monday. Load car up with books to take to charity shop. Sort through MIL's clothes with her friend to ascertain what will be needed, etc. Head currently spinning!

We are seven weeks on from being told MiL only had weeks left. She does seem to have deteriorated a little but not much and not to the extent we are immediateky concerned.

We thought their diagnosis was not right but were not able to really input from turkey. Niece has shared something her dad told her, but didnt tell us. In fact the doctors didn’t tell us either so I don’t believe BiL was honest with his daughter.

MIL remains in comfort care while they decide if she stays there, goes home or goes to a care home. Mil isn’t happy where she is, but also seems to have come to the conclusion she can’t go home, albeit that is where she would like to be

We just have to sit back and let events unfold. If it comes to a home or care home decision the BiL issue will arise again. We have already had to send a firm written response to something he said that was rubbish

The continued refusal to speak to us other than formally in writing really makes things near impossible. I believe one of the nurses has told him as much also

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
