*jono* bizarrely I'm seeing much more of that from the union side. "Remember the Olympics, 300 years of tradition" etc, etc. The yes vote are sensibly staying well away from the historical chat. It's not relevant and off putting to most modern Scots.
The pro-indy vote is NOT SNP. Check out Tommy Sheridan's speech in Kirkcaldy recently to see the Socialist view, check out the link from the Scottish Greens to see their view. And actually it does all come down to facts and figures. There is a sizeable chunk of the Scottish population who's vote would be swayed to either Yes or No depending on which one would make them £500 a year better off! Sizeable enough that it's actually a referendum decider.

This is proving to be a very interesting thread.
I'm a bit like Daviec in that I have voted since I could but didn't actually believe that it would make a difference. The referendum vote however is a much bigger and yes potentially life changing decision.
One of the things this thread has highlighted ( and I can't remember by who and therefore its base of evidence) is that my assumption that a 'no' vote would mean that we carry on as we are.
I was a definite no based on the 'if it's not broke don't fix it' or more selfishly that I'm all right as things are and fear and caution around the unknown and 'what if's' of independence were too much of a risk for me.
I'm still not a yes but the thread has made me realise that I do need to be better informed before I make a decision. It's helpful to know that AS wouldn't be leading our country as he was one of the reasons that I was a no. I can concede that he is a great politician but tbh I don't really trust him ( perhaps the sign of a good politician)

I'm amazed that the EU officials are claiming that it would be "extremely difficult, if not impossible" for an independent Scotland to join the EU.
By their own rules candidate countries must have a stable democracy that respects human rights and the rule of law; a functioning market economy capable of competition within the EU; and the acceptance of the obligations of membership, including EU law.
Anyone feel we don't meet those criteria? Ot that any other EU member state would seriously veto us?

I don't think e was saying it was impossible, he was saying that Scotland would have to re-apply, it won't just happen.
I don't like Osbourne, or his hectoring tone the other day, but I think he is correct, that if Scotland keeps the pound the Scottish economy would be bound to economic policy as decided by the English/Welsh parliament (as was the UK with ERM thingy a coupleof decades ago) and independence would effectively not exist. The other option is the Euro, that might work, but might not, look at Spain/Greece/Ireland/ etc....
still interesting though.

TD - nobody has said in an official capacity that the EU would reject Scotland. Spain obviously say they would because they don't want to encourage Catalonia's claims for independence. At present there is no precedent for what would happen as we are already EU citizens. This is not a new country trying to gain entry from outside. We are already there as part of a union. And as you say would the EU seriously get rid of a stable, energy rich, strong economy like Scotland?
