I’ve used an Edge Explore before and for walking (rather than running) it’s not bad. Apparently the algorithms aren’t meant to cope with arm swinging like a watch but if you read it like a map then that’s fine. Which Edge is it you are looking at?

Since asking, a cycling friend has recommended a Wahoo rather than Garmin. It would be for map reading purposes so the arm swinging might not be an issue!
The Explore I think?

My other half used to use his edge for running but has since bought another garmin. I’ve not used my edge for maps. I would still get lost so possibly not much use for me anyway :)

for wahoo vs Garmin see dcrainmaker.com for a comparison (although I guess it focuses on the cycling features mostly). I know Garmin do handheld GPSes for walking so maybe look at one of those if you aren't going to use it for cycling?

Or use a Garmin Fenix for walking and cycling as well as running. The maps are OK for turn by turn navigation if that is what you are after?

OS Maps on an iPhone are excellent for walking, though i haven’t tried a pre-plotted route if that’s what you fancy. We always take a proper map too. If you buy an OS map now you get access to the online/mobile version too

+1 for OS maps. Although depending on area, I typically download as well, some places I visit don't have much signal.
I also tend to print OS maps for my route onto A4 from bing maps folded into an airport security zip lock bag rather than take a full or multiple OS versions.

Have an Edge for cycling, and Fenix for everything else. Would have thought the issue with the Edge, is that it will probably auto pause if you use it for walking, will give it a go later and let you know
