The mathsy bit behind high and low pre test probability situations isn't really talked about and I guess the general public don't always get that part of the message. Same with antibody test sensitivity and specifity.
leaguefreak - not just Community testers who don't do such tests routinely. In fact the nasal swab for COVID has to go very deep. A colleague described it as 'feeling like you are about to hit your eyeball' (apologies to those of a delicate disposition)
Having been swabbed I would describe the nasal part as tickling my eyeballs, we all came out wiping tears from our eyes! This is my worry about self testing, throat swabs need to be deep enough to cause gag reflex and ^ for the nasal swab, thats hard to do to yourself
Expect a wee spike in Dorset. Three people seriously injured from cliff diving. I’m struggling to find sympathy for them. Meant two helicopters landing on the beach. Hundreds of folks all packed together to evacuate the beach.
My mum had to do 2 throat swabs to check she was covid negative (first was inconclusive) before getting a feeding tube fitted during an overnight stay and apparently a very unpleasant process - particularly with a dry mouth from a few weeks of radiotherapy.
I'm not watching much news TV - because it makes me shout at it too much, so I would have missed it if there has been any - but this is the sort of thing there should be more explanation of.
A few days back, there was discussion about respirator hoods which allowed patients to see the full face of medical staff treating them. These were developed at Southampton University, and are already in use at Southampton hospital (not sure if anywhere else). My friend Rebecca was interviewed about them for Channel 5 news.
Really sorry about your mum MM, and hope she improves. We have stayed home for 10 weeks now, as OH is shielding, and it's easier to both do it. Being retired, we're lucky enough to be able to do it without financial loss, but it has been tough. We're wondering about driving to somewhere really quiet for a walk tomorrow, now that we're allowed to.
Go there if you want to talk about whether it's real, whether the government are trying to control us, etc, etc.
