Because the housemates will not be infected immediately, only if and when the first person becomes infectious at a later date (which is itself a small probability).

Though it needs rapid effective testing for any of it to make much sense, and that still isn't available AFAIK. In fact the testing doesn't seem to be linked to it at all which is bonkers.

Perhaps to expand on that, it would be a full week from the first contact, to the housemates of the isolator to potentially being infectious - and inside that week, the isolator will almost certainly know if they are ill or not. Even without a test.

I'm finding the more the restrictions are relaxed, the less I want to go near the shops.

I would love to sit in a pub garden with a drink and a meal and would love to be allowed to go spend a night or three away in a tent - this glorious weather isn't helping!

But I'm finding more and more of any shopping we do is online, I'll go to the local Co-op as that's rarely busy but the thought of a big supermarket, John Lewis or a shopping centre I find quite scary.

one of my dad's friends lost his wife to terminal cancer a couple of weeks ago.
She was in great pain at the end (something I am so grateful to say dad never suffered from) and in the last 7 days the husband called 999 10 times for more pain relief. They wanted her to go into hospital but that would have been alone so she stayed at home

very sad

and now the husband has no one. he can't go to the pub or mates because of the virus and doesn't have work now as he changed his working life to allow him to spend time with his wife

it's easy to forget that there is life death and suffering outside of covid

I'm confused. If I'm contacted by the tracers I'll have to self-isolate for 14 days but I can't have a test if I'm not displaying symptoms. Meanwhile my brother who I share a flat with doesn't have to self-isolate? But if I'm an asymptomatic carrier isn't there a risk I'll infect him?

Rosehip - the thought of what the shopping centre in MK could look like is scary. My daughter works there and her employer is keeping the staff up to date with their plans but just thinking about her going back makes me anxious.

I'm interpreting Scotland lockdown easing Phase 1 from today as allowing socially distanced run meet up with one or two friends. Anyone else go a view on that (Scotland or equivalent rule in England?)? Cheers, :-) G

jda I too agree that the test, trace and self-isolate programme is unlikely to work well until we can get rapid test results. I even fear that the timing of the implementaion this week might have been politically motivated, but I will reserve any elaboration of those thoughts for the politics thread. Whatever we might feel about the current political situation, it is crucial that we all to what we can to minimize any deterioration of public cooperation with the measures necessary to control CV-19. Test, trace and isolate is probably the best way forward for the foreseeable future, and we should do what we can to help make it work

I know CMK Shopping Centre inside, out and backwards.

Initially, when it opens, it will be mobbed with people wanting a retail fix.

But, once that's died off, it should be OK.

Yes, maybe avoid weekends and lunchtime.

But a visit to say Debenhams, Primark or John Lewis should be low risk

I think that Scotland is going to allow an outdoor meet-up between one whole household and another whole household, providing there is distancing.

That meet up can be in say a park or communal place. Unlike England, I think it can also be in a private garden.
