The symptoms can take 14 days to appear. The 50k are of people testing positive with symptoms. I see no reason why they will notvrenain this high for a few more days yet, and then it depends on how people behaved over the new year.

Many people do still physically have to go in to work. Friend told ua last week that her husband had a positive covid test - he along with the rest of his family, had picked it up the week before when they were visiting his dying mother in hospital (she died of heart failure, was elderly and has been in poor health for ages, but picked up Covid while she was in there).
I know for some people it’s tempting to look at the figures and assuming that the infections are all a result of people breaking the rules - I’m sure some are, but I’d be surprised if it’s the majority. Lots of healthcare workers getting it, we’ve had issues with waste collection here which are apparently a mix of additional recycling after Christmas plus staff either having Covid or having to isolate. I’m sure there’s lots of other jobs like that where you either have direct contact with the public or colleagues, and/or where social distancing is difficult.
Point I’m trying to make is - not just rule breakers getting ill, and I’m sure for anyone who does get it, being ill is bad enough without everyone assuming it’s your own fault that you caught it.

As someone who currently has it, I heartily agree.

It's not just rule breakers catching it, but I'd suspect that rule breaking is a major cause of spreading it. Though of course over Christmas holidays if one family member brings it home the likelihood of the rest of the household catching it is fairly high, so that immediately becomes a big multiplier, especially with lots of indoor time.

I have to say that I think schools must be a driver of this. The govt seems focussed on the fact that children don't tend to get seriously ill or even have symptoms, but they must be able to spread it to teachers and their families, classroom assistants, lunchtime supervisors, bus drivers, etc. The idea that schools can be "covid-secure" with 36 people crammed into a classroom is blatant nonsense. The answer to the mystery of how cases kept rising during the November "lockdown" is surely that schools were still open.

I fully expect that ScotGov will create a new higher lockdown level today.
That having been said, there's not a lot left for them to close here.
All restaurants, cafes, and pubs are closed. Non-essential shops are closed. The community centre and library are closed. There is no organised sport.
I go walking for two or three hours a day. And a run most days too. This regime keeps me sane and poses no risk to anyone else. I will continue with it whatever.

Sorry. Local meme of Boris doing the rounds here, it would be funny if it wasn’t so serious.

A large majority of people I know contracted it via their kids exposed to virus at school/largely with no symptoms. Others have been work contracts and then people like myself who hasn’t broken any rules barely went anywhere obsessive with hand cleaning and still caught the darn thing.
It is unfair to presume it’s due to people breaking the rules, although root cause could have been that they spread it to innocent people and onwards.
