I can't see how keeping schools and universities open is justified given the graphs shown last night.
Their age group are the ones with the most concentrated incidence of the virus and yet they're the only ones still mingling? Even if others in their households aren't, they'll still be going places like shops, to work, looking after people.

I must admit, I thought that. The school age infections accelerated then the older ones followed. Doesn't need a scientist to see the link.

Much as I really don't want schools to close again, my money is on schools/unis "open as they can be" until Xmas, students go home for Xmas, everyone locked down properly January until April, remote learning only.

The slides don't show schools or universities as being the cause of the increasing cases at all. They just show that cases started increasing in younger age groups before older age groups, nothing more.
They do show that locations of transmission are definitely not caused by the school and university though as the cases were increasing among those age groups well before the actual schools and universities reopened.
It's other interactions that are causing the transmission. Secondary school kids are not causing transmission to university students and university students are not causing transmission to 25-35 year old adults. Just general mixing amongst families and it gradually making its way up through the ages.

Here's an idea: enforced rampant socialising amongst University students. Free beer, as long as it comes from local breweries. Half price food takeaways. During November, get infection rates amongst students as near to 100% as possible. Participating students would have to agree to be kept secure during the period (imprisoned, really). By mid-December they should very largely be clear for release back into the community.
(Ok, there may be certain issues involved. No scheme is perfect.)

It’s the main reason lots of kids go to Uni, otherwise might as well just do an OU course and save some brass.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter how good a testing or test and trace system we have when it seems that there are far too many idiots in the world. My friend is a nurse in an orthopaedic OPD and on Thursday a guy attended and told them that he'd been feeling ill so had been for a CV19 test, hadn't had the result yet but as he was feeling better turned up for his appointment. We don't stand a chance.

Totally agree
We can all blame the government as much as we like but we the public have to take the advice given
At the end of the day if Covid spreads it’s our own fault
