can be up to 12 months for periods to return after depo. 35 would be very young for menopause - average age is 52

Ok cheers. Not so much worried as just wondered why so different this time. Yeh 35 is quite young, but history of probs in family at young age, hence docs advice to do tests first.

All the different forms of contraception have advantages and disadvantages, and different people react differently to them, so it's impossible to say which is best in absolute terms
Also, remember that not everyone gets every side effect.

tri girl - depends on so many things.
are you in a relationship? have you taken hormonal contraception before and how did you get on with it? what are your periods like? if they are heavy/painful then you might be steered towards hormonal solutions. mirena can also lighten periods. but the traditional coil could make them worse.
re depression, did the onset/bouts of depression coincide with starting/changing the pill ever? if so then consider whether it is worth it to you to take it.
worth having a good chat with your GP (and there are several that contribute to this thread) or with someone at a family planning clinic. and be very clear about what you want. if you want regular light periods or no periods, say so, but be prepared it will mean hormones.

Tri girl - you're exactly the same as me. I'm looking for a non-hormonal option for exactly the same reasons but I don't want the copper coil as I've had very heavy periods in the past and don't want to make it worse. I'm thinking about getting a diaphragm - does anyone recommend that?

Claire - I had a diaphragm for a while. They are a bit of a faff and completely destroy 'spontaneity'. Also, if you get the wrong size (as I did) they can give you back-ache.
Tri-girl - I was on depo in my 20s, and a selection of contraceptive pills - no weight gain. I went back to depo in my mid 30s, first few months I was fine, and then after being on it for a year I put on weight that I cannot shift. Came off the depo in January and onto the mini-pill, still haven't lost the weight. Mr WT had a vasectomy in April and tomorrow we find out if it worked. I can't begin to say how excited I am because eating very little, exercising and not losing weight is kinda depressing. If you're worried about weight gain, I would suggest trying something that isn't going to stay in your system for months, like the depo. If you start taking the pill and it doesn't agree with you, you can stop taking it and your body can get back to itself quicker than it will with depo.
