Thanks KK, that is really useful to know As usual I am probably worrying about a scenario that may not happen. Like you say I had a look around and the potential side effects of alternatives seemed pretty naff in comparison!

PS, it's always possible to go to a family planning clinic to get contraception, or maybe try to see a lady GP. Many male GPs are great at contraception but they do tend to do less of it, so might not always be totally up to date with latest advice (just as some female GPs might not be quite as confident with man-bits problems..!)

I had the same debate with a male GP at my surgery so I swapped to a lady GP. She said that provided I am healthy, don't smoke, blood pressure is fine etc I can continue with the pill after I'm 35. I have to go every 6 months though rather than every 12 months which seems strange.

ndellar ...rather than the pill, have considered the Mirena? - I went from 'niagra' to 'sahara' over the space of a few months of having it fitted...and after 7 years of the same one (I didn't need it for contraception) I'd only start to very lightly spot. Just had it replaced and after my six week check they'll not see me until smear time or when it's replaced

NDelar when I got to 35 a male GPTried to put the frightners on me and force me down the surgery route. At the time I was married and I think I said if anyone was having surgery it would by my ex husband. Spoke to a female GP a few days afterwards and she told me I could stay on the pill fine no problem as long as I was healthy and no family history of breast cancer.
I also remember once storming out of an appointment with a male GP once after I had tried to discuss alternatives with him and I felt he was a bit insensistive

Agree with tabasco, no reason to come off the pill if your BP is ok, no FH breast cancer and you dont smoke
I myself took it from age 17 to age 40
Only stopped cos I no longer had any need for contraception

Pill is great
was very happy with it
Am happier to have my own hormones now after all these years, but as a contraceptive, it did just fine
