Hi Wise Ladies...and chaps with such knowledge Don't want to look like a total wuss but just had my Mirena changed (Monday) and was wondering when I can run again - sorry if I sound totally G-hey about it ...it think I'm just worried about it 'shifting', or heavens above, dropping out I'm still aware of a sensation/feeling that something is different. ...or should I just HTFU? Looking for a bit of advice please I've been on Yasmin for quite a while (about 9 years), and it has suited me perfectly. No apparent side effects. I go to the doctor every year who basically takes my blood pressure, weighs me, asks me how I am and gives me another years worth of pills. Last year he said something that has made me worry like "now you are approaching 35 maybe we ought to discuss alternatives next time". Now it is approaching the time I have to go back for another years supply. Argh! I know that GPs get guidelines/targets, but can someone tell me if I'm 35, fit and healthy what I can do to persuade him to let me stay as I am? I guess he will explain the risks of me continuing to stay on it? Some of my friends are in their 40s and granted they have had a break through having kids but have gone back on to similar types of pill afterwards. If there is a really big risk to my health I could be persuaded BUT what I object to is having something that works well disrupted to fit in to someones targets / money saving exercise. I've got a big running event happening at the end of Aug and I haven't sat down and worked out at what stage of my cycle tht will be, I'm wondering if he won't budge to ask him to give me an extra 6 months supply just so I'm not having any teething issues caused by something new slap bang in the middle. Thanks in advance |

My doctor has been saying that too ndellar, for the last few years. I'm 47, and have been on the pill since I was 20, I don't have children, so there have been no breaks. I was given a print-out of various different methods, but all of them, as far as I could see carried the chance of weight gain (I've had none while on the pill), hair loss (I have very fine hair already, so no thanks), acne (my skin was bad until I stopped using anything with parabens in it a few years ago, so no thanks), and loss of libido (that's private!). I think they're just obliged to keep you informed of alternatives. |

If you are fit, healthy and non-smoking (and no other health issues like migraines or blood pressure) it is perfectly acceptable to use the combined pill until age 50. It's slightly contraceptive over-kill past the late 40s and some women choose to use other methods but if the pill really suits you and you don't have any other risks, there is no absolute reason to change. Yasmin and the other newer pills have a slightly higher blood-clot risk than the older generation pills (like microgynon), which is sometimes worth considering in the post-40 years but still OK to use. And yes, we are obliged to offer all women other methods, in particular the longer-acting stuff like coils/implants etc...! |
