Le Greg - new improved recipe
If you cycle instead of running, it doesn't improve your running. If you run AND cycle as cross-training, it means you can do A LOT more training without injury.

My running performance has definitely improved since I started cycling to and from work (about 2 miles each way). Free cross training for me. I should record it on my log really.

my running would suck if I didn't cycle to work.

certain cycling styles can improve muscle strength (I think), and fast twitch response both useful for running.

I've been cycling about 4.5 miles a day since starting a new job in December and it's really helping. I've particularly noiticed it in my speed sessions. As I have asthma too it's also helping my lung capacity.

I'm currently cycling rather than running owing to having an ankle niggle. I'm hoping it's going to keep my fitness up.

And I'm sure the extra cycling does help my running when I'm doing both at the same time.

Did anyone see the story in the Metro this morning about a guy in Poland who was cycling so hard that his legs caught fire from the friction from his trousers!
Maybe he thought that was what 'feeling the burn' meant

Thanks for the big response in such a short time, I feel encouraged, though to be fair the cycling is really to guard against injury rather than improving my times, though that would be nice too!

I cycled 44 miles yesterday to work and back, feel a bit worn out today, but feel I'm up to a 10k run tonight which would never have been the case after a 4 hour run rather than a 4 hour cycle ride.

Fortunately I don't cycle fast enough to be concerned about my legs catching fire, I did have trouble getting my knees to work yesterday evening though.
