Techie help please!!

I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to bike techie matters, so need help! Out on a ride at the weekend and I've noticed that when in certain gears there is quite a lot of noise, where as I'm sure there never used to be. Could something have moved (front/rear mech?) so that it's not lining the gears up properly?

Also if I'm travelling at speed (perhaps on a downhill) and then got to another hill where I have to drop down gears quickly, sometimes my chain comes off. Could this be related? Or am I just not changing gears correctly?

Hammerite - I had the same problem when i first got my new bike, and it is to do with tightening something on the gears (oh lord I don't know the techie stuff). I went to my local bike shop and they sorted it for me. i now have NO problems with my chain coming off, or my gears cranking instead of going into gear..

could be the front shifter needs adjusting. your local bike shop should be able to check and adjust without too much hassle or cash.

Cool, thanks as I thought. I shall try to take it in at the weekend and see what they say.

New gear cables stretch over time so the position of the chain alters - To adjust this there should be a barrel where the cable comes out of the shifter which you need to adjust anti clockwise to take up slack from the stretch.

On chain dropping off - the limiter on the rear mech needs adjusting. There are two cross head screws on the mech which will say 'low' & 'high' next to them - you need to screw in (clockwise) the 'high' one just slightly with the chain on the smallest cog. As you do this the chain line will move towards the wheel (& prevent the chain falling off the smallest cog).

Hope this helps

Are you running a triple hammerite?

If so try and keep your chain in a straight line as well, eg don't keep it the big chain ring up front and try select all the gears on the rear cassette - if that makes sense.

Thanks Konaboy, I shall investigate try out your suggestions.

Cliffy - yes I am running a triple, which makes it even more embarassing that I didn't make it up my last hill at the weekend!!
