Yeah, the geometries do seem to vary from those that are closer to road bikes with bigger tyres to more upright mountain bikes.

Gus/Gooner - I did have a look at Canyon bikes and saw those bars. Fear not, I also think they look awful.

Di2 not worth it full stop IMO unless you race. Don't get me wrong, if I had the money not to have to worry and could just get whatever bike I wanted, I'd have it, but for the extra cash it costs I just don't see the benefit for normal use. You also have to factor in the extra cost for professional maintenance, higher cost replacement parts and ensuring you always have charge.

eL Bee! won't have Di2 because he likes the reassurance of knowing he can do a temporary repair at the roadside rather than having to be rescued if anything goes wrong with the gears when he's out. He would, however, not have anything other than Shimano unless he was good enough not to have to buy and look after his own bike. (Having read all the reviews and specifications and talked everyone's head into mush at Cyclewise he's just ordered an expensive new bike, but it's a trail bike rather than a gravel bike.)

As a general point if you’ve only ridden a road bike and usually on a nice day from home on good roads, then taking an off-road bike out in the back or on the back of a car, and throwing it around in the countryside for the first time is a real eye opener. I’d be looking at reliability as a priority. You can always upgrade later. Stuff like bottom brackets and derailleurs don’t last long if you’re riding hard and often

DT - define last long ?
I have replaced the BB twice on my race crux and am on my 2nd derailleur and that only needed replacing as I crashed it racing. 6 years old.

You’ve done well. It’s years (well, decades in truth) since I rode a bike but I remember breaking rear mechs. I was riding in the Peak and I guess two or three times weekly with a good outing at the weekend
