Why did it break? How did it break? I ask as I have come across a Shimano style chain with a pin that was not put in properly [and so came loose] if that is it then with a pin properly inserted or a quick link I imagine it would be fine. If it was something else then it depends on what the problem is.

Well it seems I'll get away with it for a while yet then!! The nice man also said my back bearings were dead so it needs to go to the shop soon anyway :-/

For the cost of a chain I'd just swap it for peace of mind.

Yeah good point. It's just the time issue, never any time. Will try and get in a bike shop tomorrow somehow as have a 200k on Sunday.

the turbo, you were right, can't wait to really get going on it and get some proper training down.

How much difference will new wheels make in terms of speed?

I've just replaced the basic wheels that came with my Cannondale with a pair of Fulcrum Racing 7s. They feel really nice. I've been out tonight and averaged over 17mph for the first time in ...........well, ever probably!

Now I know I've been doing more miles this year than previously but those wheels must have made some of the difference. That's an increase of about 1.5mph in a week!

What do we think? And why do they make so much difference as I can't say there is much weight saving overall between the 2 pairs.

4 things.

1. Weight distribution. Weight at the centre of the wheel makes less difference than weight at the edge so if you have two wheels of the same total weight but one has a heavier rim and the other a heavier hub then the one with the light rim will feel faster - it is easier to accelerate.

2. Aerodynamics. Put some deeper rims on and you will get another bit of speed - and when you go faster you get even more! (Because aero wheels move through the air and the net air movement is composed of the movement of air + your movement through it so when you resolve the vectors the faster you go the more the average wind direction is from the front and favours being aero.)

3. Rolling resistance

- new wheels probably have new tyres and new tires roll faster
- new wheels probably have new bearings with actual grease that has not dried out
- if you put the wheels on on Saturday it was warmer and the rolling resistance from the tyres will have been less.

4. You say "much" weight saving. It doesn't take much - unless you are Chris Froome then your pedalling like the rest of us is not very good -it is uneven and you have to accelerate with every pedal stroke even when it seems you are going at a steady speed. Compare the specs on your wheels and ones that cost two or three times as much - it is about 200g different. How much is not much?
