Sounds like bottom bracket bearings JJ, you should get them sorted. Oh and get the bike looked atat Halfords while you're at it

I suspect loose crank or loose bottom bracket? Did you get it from a shop? If so go back and let them have a look at it. It is always a good idea to run over all the bits and peices on a bike that can loosen themslevs up, especially on a new bike. I Holland we get an after sale service with each new bike we buy, where you go back after a month, then after 6 months for a tune up and tightening session...

Pedals could be loose too?

Have you fallen with the bike? Could also be a bent crank rubbing against the chain wheel? Or it could be hitting the derailleur?

Yes, as long as it is just loose... pitty you are so far away, I'd come and show you how to tighten it up :-)
