give it a try, with a bit of luck its just the crank, but if it is the bottom bracketr and you've cycled too much with it loose, it may need replacing... it is under warranty still though, isnt it?

Go back to Halfords and tell them to sort it out, so if it is the BB, then at least they cannot accuse you of tinkereing with it...

Halfords should sort it because of the warranty, personally I am keeping them well away from my bikes. I'll never forget going in for cleats and having to explain they weren't the same as gears, and no I don't want to buy £40 pedals in order to get the £10 cleats that come with them :-(

JJ - is it a mountain bike that's been in the muck? If it has it could be some got in the bottom bracket, but if it's cracking rather than grinding it could be more serious. If you use your hands to yank the cranks left to right and there is some 'play' in it then you probably need a new bottom bracket.

Toks - hard question to answer, I don't do Tris and don't have a racer anymore. Most road bikes will be fine but a specialist tri bike is best if that's all you will use it for. The more you spend the lighter the bike will probably be (i.e. faster). £500+ should get you something pretty good - I think Rach races on a Brompton??

Most good local bike shops will throw in an after sale service.

Tok - you shouldn't need a specialist tri/time trial bike but any road bike would probably do the trick as you can add tri bars at any time. What budget were you looking at? you should be able to get a decent enough road bike for around the £500 mark, or at this time of year one of the 07 models of a £500 bike should come in at around £400 (it's bargain time as the 08 models are being released).

Anyone going to this? cycleshow.co.uk or has anyone been before? is it worth visiting?

Toks - do you have a bike now? If you don't put money aside for accessories, like helmet, gloves, bike shorts, mini-pump capable of doing 120psi for road tyres, puncture repair kit, bottle holders, cycle computer even... the list is endless. Which probably explains why my utility room is crammed to the ceiling. Also the nights are drawing in, I've been busy charging my lights today :-)
