So when you buy the pedals, they automatically come with the right attachment to go in your shoe? And are SPD's fixed or is there a little give in the angle of them, I know with the SPD-SLs you have a slight adjustment to straight of about 3 or 4 degrees. And are SPD's easier to clip into? And do you just twist your foot to take your foot out?

Pedals come with the cleat to go on the shoe, so if you buy a non-compatible shoe you'll need to pay a bit extra for the matching cleat. Also means you can take the pedals with you if on holiday for putting on a hire bike. The bike shop should set you up so the cleat is in the right position over the pedal and you twist to release. The tricky bit is getting the brain to twist and release the foot that is going to touch the floor rather than the other one (beginner's cleat fall number 2)

thanks for that Jules, will try and remember that. Is there a trick to putting your feet back in them, as in always put them in when foot is towards the floor or not?

OK so if I buy SPD compatible shoes and SPD pedals I will be sorted.

Well I was a member of a masters club before my shoulder dislocation, and have been swimming since my operation, and think my technique is still quite good.

Good choice! There have been a few people saying very nice things about that bike (even some begrudgingly admitting that Giant's can be nice!)

(and of course I ride a Giant now too :-))

Can anyone recommend a decent spinning bike? Currently got an old stationary bike in the garage which I cross train on fair bit just want to invest in something better.

Toks - if you are serious about IM, then changing is a very good thing to do. But get more confidence on your current Decathlon bike first... and maybe just get your ATB more speedy using slick tyres... there's plenty of time...
