The Specialized Tricross is supposed to be a pretty good bike according to the Cycling Plus magazine. You can use it for touring too. There are two versions of it, one with better bits than the other.

The dearer Tricross uses the s-works E5 tubing the same as what the pro cx team riders ride where as the comp uses A1 tubing.

idio I know what you mean, but if you look at the tricross, i hope I got the right bike, it's trying to be a bit of everything.
it's a diffiicult choice for one bike, but I would go for a mountain bike hard tail, with lock out forks. Buy a set of slicks for commuting.
