My brother swears by them but he mainly uses them when he's carrying a big backpack. Enjoy your race

Some people have no spatial awareness I guess. My new poles are arriving today so I’m taking them to Macclesfield Forest on Sunday to give them a proper trial. Where I live (south Manchester) is flatter than a flat thing that’s been flattened so I’ll feel a bit of an idiot practising with them round here!

Will you be using them all the time? If so, (and too late now) 'friends' tell me the folding ones are smaller/shorter and easier to put in/on a rucksack than telescopic ones.
Do you use you hands much? Stiles, gates, rocks/scrambling, maps, photos, snacks, drinks? Poles can be a disadvantage if so.
But no harm in getting some of the cheaper ones and trying them out?

I've ended up doing loads more walking than running this month, mainly because eL Bee! and I had two weeks off work and prioritised doing things we can both do, whereas on work weeks I run on three or four mornings. The outcome is that I'm almost two months ahead of my 1000 miles in 2020 target.

I keep meaning to have a go with the pair that live in my car. - I bought them for youngest as a trial and he got on well with them. Mum also found them quite handy walking last week, said it made a huge difference on the updulates on the Whinlatter paths and she felt safer having an extra point of contact on rough ground.
But I also live in pancake flatness and feel daft walking from home with them.
