Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I heard Peter Jones (Dragon's Den) talking on Radio 2 this afternoon about the word "failure". He suggested it should be banished from our language and replaced with "feedback". The idea being that saying you've failed at something is negative but what you've actually done is learned something that will help you do it better next time. Reframing the negative with positive language is effective, as long as you can convince yourself to believe it.

I’ve ordered it secondhand but ‘very good’ from World of Books (along with Viv Albertine’s second memoir which I somehow missed at the time)

GM I’ve been telling QP for years ‘there’s no such thing as failure only learning opportunities’. It’s linked with Carol Dweck’s growth mindset stuff. Worth a look from a sporting perspective.

EP I have found that having a good understanding of the stress response is helpful in itself. When you are experiencing stress resources are diverted from your cortex (thinking part of the brain) to the limbic system (emotional). You can’t think yourself out of a fight or flight moment. The best way to regulate in that moment is through focusing on the basics - breath, senses, rhythm. So focusing on your breathing or your stroke can help to regulate you.

(When I saw this thread I also immediately thought of drug users and weird shops full of bongs and giant oatmeal rizlas, and copies of the furry freak brothers and fat freddies cat. I apologise for lowering the tone. And being quite old.)
