I've read Italian Neighbours and A Season With Verona by Parks, both enjoyable.

Carol Dweck became very popular in education but, as with most things, as more teachers were trained about Growth Mindset, the less understood it became and the less effective was. As with most things, you really need to have the whole picture - a proper study of it with solid understanding - instead of nuggets and sound bites pick up at a 1 day course, that get churned out and mean different things to different people.

Yes Tim Parks is one of those authors (a bit like John Higgs or Geoff Dyer) who seems to just randomly write these days about whatever interests him, and the publisher will indulge them, because they write well or have sold well in the past. Parks has done a book consciousness too that I really must read, his books tend to annoy those looking for a particular book on a particular topic by a trusted expert, because he lacks the depth of a "real" expert might bring, but his insight/wit/personality/writing style make up for that. I like his guide to Italian literature as well, but never finished it (because some git requested it back from the library after a couple of uninterrupted renewals thus jolting me out of my complacency thinking I didn't need to finish it quite yet - and it's hard to otherwise get hold of) There's an ideal job thread elsewhere on Fetch somewhere. I think that would be mine, writing on random niche stuff that interests me and getting paid for it. Roman roads, consciousness, the right to roam, mysticism (ooh Robert Wright carefully excises all the mysticism of Buddhism from his book, even when he practically has a near-mystical experience), Green Man, 8 bit computer game simulations of governments/cold war, analogue synthesisers, niche ultras etc etc etc |

Pix, few pages back, made me actually give up triathlon and focus on cycling. The sheer panic from a mass swim, pool or open water, didn't do me any good. I only got through by yogic breathing and focussing on my stroke. Last out of the water, fastest on the bike, which I enjoyed... Life is too short for self torture in my view/case. |

Don't know John Higgs but have read loads of Geoff Dyer. Your middle para makes Parks sound very Dyer! I have an interesting book I bought years ago (and now can't find in spite its pink cover and butterfly image). 'On Flirtation' by the psychologist Adam Phillips. I've found a review that describes it well: 'Phillips looks at life as a tale to be told but rejects the idea of a master plot. Instead, he says, we should be open to the contingent, and flirtation shows us the way.' Very Dyer/Parks et al ... and I'd like this thread too be like that. |

Before I go though... being wide ranging and open to all sorts doesn't necessarily contradict Gimme's sensible post ^. As someone who heartily dislikes inspirational quotes I am not a fan soundbite and AHEM - nuggets (chicken or otherwise) MUST go out. |

Hmm, not saying it's not relevant but a bit long winded and stating the obvious so far. Needs to get to the point quicker! I would except most reasonably intelligent people to understand the type one rewards thing quite easily in a sentence or two. Am onto the last section where - with a bit of luck - she'll explain a few tricks that might help us 'want what we like' (see title) |
