I think there is a difference between practice and effective practice. If you are doing something wrong and just doing it more often surely it's worse.

Quite, Lums. Marathon training for mortals, I'd argue, is different. Quite simply, more is more. End of.

My point precisely Lums. I did actually say practice meaning to do more of the activity in a focussed way? My point also was if you DON'T do it or do LESS the don't expect to see any improvements *necessarily*
Gawd I dunno...

Homer, my 5k time has improved despite me training for a 35 miler and double marathons. If you do more running your running economy and aerobic conditioning improves, I guess it doesn't work like that for swimming...

BUT speedwork always has a place in my opinion unless you are a complete beginner...Don't neglect the fast stuff. IMHO yes, just an opinion speed work or sharpening always helps whatever you are traning for. It's just how you mix it to deliver the correct focus for each event.

Sorry, Mr Gobi, but, at the risk of getting flamed (again), your last post doesn't, to my poor mortal eyes, make a blind bit of sense...

Homer (and Lums, and IanM) more slow running is just more slow running; Gobi had a point when he pointed out to me that I shouldn't run THAT slow! My "slow" was just laziness. My best marathons came when I did just what mic and Gobi suggest - long runs with varied pace, some bits of them at marathon and half marathon. Not just ambling woodland picnic pace all the way. Oh, yes, and midweek quality sessions ...

But that is OT really. I suspect that on a sensible basis of lots of good miles (not hard, just sensible) you can get your speed up with just a few sessions of drills, short reps, etc. This is more in line with Gobi's approach than mic's. But I think that for me to get my best possible 5k time at a given state of training I need to do the sort of work-outs that mic suggests; I know i like doing 1k reps off 60 second recoveries, for example, an actually far faster than my actual 5k pace. Just like Boo and Boo's 400s! But I suspect Gobi will tell me that i should stick to my 5k pace for them anyway!
