I keep buying The National albums but nothing touches Boxer so I always feel disappointed.

Think I will try the New Lemon Twigs album today. Anyone else got any recommendations?

I'm going to try Nanna's album - How To Start A Garden. It's all more chilled out than the Of Monsters and Men stuff, but I quite like it so far.

This Lankum lp has been out a few weeks, I've been sleeping on it, but it's a stormer. Even going properly My Bloody Valentine on the last track (bit of a left turn for a Dublin folk band!) Great year for lps so far, just not from the usual quarters.

BC Camplight,The Last Rotation of Earth. I’ve pre-ordered it based on the album Shortly After Takeoff and the three tracks release already. She’s Gone Cold is stuck in my head.

This comes out next Friday

Bought my first new album of the year - LDR's Ocean Boulevard thing. It's probably a bit too long (74 minutes!!! :-o ) but I really like it. The only duff track for me is the last one that segues into a remix of Venice Bitch.

There's a great review of The National's new album over at Sterogum (https://www.stereogum.com/2220687/the-national-first-two-pages-of-frankenstein/reviews/premature-evaluation/) which pretty much sums up my feelings.

Having loved this band for a long time, it's tough to read "It is...a document of a band that once stacked up masterpiece after masterpiece moving into their legacy-maintenance era, doing a slightly inferior version of that thing they do so well." But the last 3 or 4 albums have seemed a bit muted, lots of pretty tunes but no real sense of urgency or power, and this one is much the same. Having said that, I do really like all the more recent albums, they've just taken time to reveal themselves, the more you listen the more you notice interesting snippets, tones, textures. I'm reasonably confident this one will be the same, over time, and I have no doubt that they'll remain a fantastic band live - looking forward very much to seeing how these new songs come across on stage in September!

About This Thread

Maintained by McGoohan
As a spin-off from Joopsy's excellent Albums of 2022 thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/albums-of-2022-62537/ this is a new thread where we commit to listen to one new album a week in 2023. Allowing a couple of weeks off for life commitments etc, that's 50 albums in the year.
EDIT - new and improved (i.e. exactly the same) for 2024
