I'm halfway through the Vampire Weekend one. They're a bit of an odd band I think. In the past, I've liked half an album but been bemused by the other tracks. I think I find them - sorry, it's an inverse chip on shoulder thing - a bit 'preppy'. There's even a song on the new album called Prep-School Gangsters or something. I sort of see them as a USA version of Mumford and Sons - which is a bit hypocritical of me, considering I like The Vaccines.

Anyway, I do actually quite like the new album so far.

Actually I'm a double hypocrite considering I love The Strokes so much, the preppiest band ever. They just hide it better. (They are all called Forbes Forbingsworth IV etc)

With Vampire Weekend, the whole preppy thing is part of the aesthetic pretty much, right down to the lyrics see in particular "Oxford Comma" ?

So if you find preppy irking, they're gonna be hard work yeah lol.

Phoenix also count as being preppy I see as well now! (who I also like) But to be honest if it's a choice between preppy versus say the faux machismo of say Kings of Leon, then I'd happily salute preppy every time.

And yeah I like the Strokes too, although I used to hate them. They kind of wore me down after the Casablancas song on Daft Punk - Random Access Memories, Instant Crush. Last lp by them was their best since the first. I kinda ignored the rest in between, although "One way trigger" bored its way into my brain.

MaTT (previously The Terminator)
Went to see the Libertines in Kingston Pryzm last night. I probably have more emotional attachment to them than any other band and to see them playing really well and releasing a new album I really like makes me really happy.

About This Thread

Maintained by McGoohan
As a spin-off from Joopsy's excellent Albums of 2022 thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/albums-of-2022-62537/ this is a new thread where we commit to listen to one new album a week in 2023. Allowing a couple of weeks off for life commitments etc, that's 50 albums in the year.
EDIT - new and improved (i.e. exactly the same) for 2024
