FF, it would be easy to estimate a slow time, so we could run at an easy pace. I've submitted a time that I will have to work hard at to get near. It's a different course this year, all off road, and 4 circuits. The distance is still 10k though.

Ahh, I assumed you weren't interested because you didn't want to race it but it's very difficult to enter a race and not race it when that's what you're used to.

That's my problem FF, if I enter a race, I have to "go for it!" I haven't got any more races this year.

I won't enter a race unless I race them because otherwise it's an expensive social run.

Very true, and expense is a big factor now in picking and choosing races.

In my olden days when I did run "properly" the club handicap races saw everyone actually given an estimated time worked out by the club statistician based on recorded races . I'm not sure I'm in agreement with being bullied into doing anything...but maybe you're using the term in a tongue in cheek way hs.
I'm all for your approach to races FF even though I'm not involved in them anymore...when I was involved races were RACES not social things for me. Great if that's what someone enjoys and each to their own but as you point out they are expensive things to do. I do know several people who do every local event and never really "race" but are hooked on adding the experience onto some social media platforms with pics of their medals. It's just a different mind set.
5k on roads today, thankfully the overnight thunderstorms blew over before dawn.

Our club did a handicap this year where you had to estimate a time before but then run “naked” as in no watch. Whoever came closest won.

Steve, "bullying" was definitely tongue in cheek. Our club is very friendly, and bullying isn't tolerated.

Well done for this mornings 5k on roads.

LL, our handicaps are "run" in exactly the same way.

Our handicaps are social events, but I think most of us set high targets, so in effect are racing ourselves.

This morning was a solo 10k on roads, at a nice steady pace.
