Lols thanks MudMeanderer, shows how carefully I read to the bottom of pages. Though it doesn't explain the details of the 95% of best 20 min bit. But it does have the thresholds. Looks like our strongest A in our TTT is within a gnat's crotchet of A+ which I hadn't realised.

On the "strength" workout a couple of nights ago I was told by the game to turn off erg or erg mode. I presume that's not relevant for a dumb trainer rider? What does an erg do? I lost stars on that workout because the on screen told me to go "full gas" for 10s sprints, with a target power of 380W. The first one I did I took it literally so hit 550W or so but it seems exceeding the target so much even for an all out effort is frowned upon by the star awarding structure. I was good for the rest and earned my stars but they didn't feel like full gas. |

JDA - we rode Espresso last night with a 5.4wkg Aplus - man was a beast and averaged 5wkg for 50 mins, we had 4 other As who were all 4.3 4.4. Having that huge horse power definately raised the level ERG mode is so that the trainer controls the effort, no impact on a dumb trainer Larks |

Larks, just expanding on Gobi's point, ERG is great in workouts. Say there is a workout that has reps based on %FTP and then recovery at a lower %FTP, the resistance of the turbo is adjusted automatically to stay at the required FTP for that rep or recovery. The rider can just stay in one gear and the turbo does the resistance adjustment to keep the rider at the required power, but that's not possible on a dumb trainer.

I think that shows the weakness of defining sprint power target based on FTP. 10s is neuromuscular, and with not much association with aerobic power. I like the idea of Sufferfest's 4DP for identifying a more complete power profile and adapting training sessions accordingly. I'm assuming it was from a standard Zwift workout/program though? They don't particularly promote themselves as a coaching platform, so developing more sophisticated sessions isn't really what they're focused on. |

Geeking for a moment - I use a piece of software called WKO (basically off line expansive training peaks). This allows me to break everything down. My profile is that of a Time Trialler and basically a CAT2 racer at FTP and 5 min power,by the time you get to a minute I am a CAT3 and at 5 seconds I'm a CAT5(American beginner) I work hard to train 5 mins and below and these are the best numbers in my life !! |

Oh in real life I did race as a 3rd cat , took me ages to get out of 4th cat as I couldnt sprint, in the end I got in a race with someone like me and we rode away from the whole field in a 2 up TT. Racing vets you could guarantee I would get in the break away - If 5 stayed away I was 5th - 6th I was 6th etc..... |
