Does it sound daft that the major driver behind me aiming for early retirement is so that I can get a dog?

No. We waited 'til we left London and both worked from home.

No, I've bought a house (rather than carry on renting) so I can have a dog.

Dogs are a massive boost to a person's well-being - even if they're exasperating or naughty occasionally - so arranging one's life to accommodate one is simply good sense, Molesy

I'm lucky to have a youngster in the house who is home more than me. Getting the dog has been a huge positive for him at a very difficult time. He is on a part time timetable at school so they have each other during the day when I am at work.

My dog iis used to a 3.5 to 4.5 miles walk every morning. Today I made him run 3 miles and walk 8. And he'd already been out for a short walk first thing. And he hates traffic and we ended up in very heavy, noisy traffic after several miles. He did what he has done before and sat down, front legs planted forwards, and just looked at me. I had been studiously ignoring his attempts to trip me up and make me stop for around 3 miles.
Which is my explanation officer, for carrying a perfectly healthy spaniel in broad daylight. Thank goodness I don't have a GSD!

Lol at Jet, H - bless him! Hope you didn't have to carry him too far. George had his first parkrun experience yesterday. I was tail running so thought I meant as well take him. Not much running done because we were with a recalcitrant choked and her parent most of the time but he enjoyed himself and behaved beautifully. The lady who does the refreshments (Leamington's own Mrs Doyle) keeps dog treats for all the canine runners and he soon worked out what a soft touch she is. He also did an excellent job of Hoovering up all the biscuit and cake crumbs at the end I think he'd quite like to go again!
