There is a badge and a certificate. And you get a new gold donor card. I'm on 53 I think and hoping to get to 100.

I'm also hoping to stay healthy long enough to make it to 100 donations. 250, though :-O Especially as components donation is quite a time commitment.

The Scribbler
I tried to give blood last night, but failed. I'm always a bit reluctant to give up a vein and although they did eventually needle me I failed to bleed! That's never happened before.

The different thing this time was being asked to drink a pint of isotonic juice before donating (think it was High 5). I don't like the taste much and by the time I'd been prodded around a bit to try and donate, I was bursting for the loo!

I find it really difficult to get an appointment outside work hours. I went onto the website this morning to re-book and although there are 3 venues I can get to and plenty of sessions, the next donation appointment available in an evening isn't until February. I really want to make sure I can donate before my trip to Zambia next year as I'll likely be banned for a few months. It will be a while before I can reach my next milestone of 50 donations (31 currently).

I’ve found that phoning can be a better option than the website, try giving them a call.

Just got notified my unit was issued to a hospital 175 miles away. Am wondering how far the average red blood cell goes round the body during its life. Is this like a great journey for a little red blood cell, a daily commute or a trip down the shops?

According to Google a red blood cell travels 300 miles around the body over 120 days

Thanks pothunter: I was going to try estimating - so about equivalent to half their lifetime total. Is there a competition for the furthest - anyone been notified their donation has gone across the sea?

Failed donation today, annoyingly enough.

Hb was only just good enough (126), then they didn’t get the needle in properly so it bruised and the blood wouldn’t flow. I’m not sure that’s ever happened before! I think they said it would count as underweight, maybe it’ll be useful for something.
