"It's not easy to get into the London Marathon. Actually, this race is among the most difficult to land a bib. Every year 120,000 runners apply for the ballot. Roughly 50,000 numbers are provided - about 25,000 via the UK ballot, another 20,000 via charities and the remaining 5,000 for overseas runners, qualified runners, sponsors etc."

from a quick google the above came from a German page. can't see any official info on the vmlm website

But that ignores EA club places, London boroughs places etc, and the estimate of *only* 5k places for GFA and championship alone seems very low ... I'd suggest this is a bit closer to the truth, but it still omits overseas entries (both ballot and running tours etc) runningdanw.wordpress.com

Personally, I think SoaPM's estimate of a 3% chance of success in the ballot will be about right this year :-(

I have a 100% success rate from ballot entries...i.e. 1 from 1 and in the end I didnt need it as the GFA times once confirmed meant that I could get that place and unfortunately I had forgotten to withdraw from the ballot and naughtily deprived someone of a place :-(

*sad statto alert*

Our accounts server has been offline all day today, and given that my current role is testing an upgrade to the accounts package, I had a fairly quiet time at work, and downloaded 9,000 lines of VMLM results to do some analysis on.

Someone posted a link somewhere to a VMLM press release that said there were about 52,000 "accepted entries" to this year's marathon, whatever that means.

Assuming my sample is representative, I can tell you that they allocated 43,745 numbers, of which 23k were red start, 3k were green start, and 17k were blue start. Of the blue starters, I reckon 3k were international, 2k were club places, just under 1k were championship, so I'm assuming 11k were ballot places, although I don't know where the deferred places from last year start.

Of the (currently) 37,587 finishers, 20k were red, 3k green, and 15k blue. Again 3k were international, 2k club places, and 1k champs, leaving 9k ballot finishers (and 2k deferring into next year?).

If anyone wants more sad analysis, I guess I could subdivide further with the collective knowledge of Fetchness - post your race number and your method of entry and I'll see how it fits into my assumptions.

29622 Red FGFA

I'm curious about how many GFA entries are accepted, if it's possible to work that one out.

I reckon there is 2-3k on red FGFA and in fact I am sure the broichure even gave you the number range so its work outable -if only I hadnt binned the brochure. Maybe another 1k GFA on green

I've kept the brochure, but the start pen info is also still on the VMLM website.

It didn't take too long to download the 9,000 lines at 1,000 per page, so one day soon I will download the whole lot and then I'll have the exact numbers.

I see that the ballot will be open from May 4 to 8 but does not specify whether there will be a cap ...
