Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Ah! Thanks, all. I couldn’t work out why I couldn’t see the differently-coloured start flag while I was laying out the route! I realised when the map opened that it had placed me at the dreaded 0,0 location, but didn’t realise that the course had also decided to start there!

Fetch, if you could make the start and finish where the “Teignmouth Pier” flag(s) is/are, that’d be great! 😀

I’ll try another one later.

I've moved the start flag to Teignmouth Pier, and removed the two flags that were on the pier - the figures look a bit more achievable now :-) I'll put something in place to stop courses being created with no start point; and maybe something that requires flags to be a minimum distance apart.

I also liked the comment on my blog about some sort of scoring system that gave extra rewards for flags that were far away.

When I plotted mine, I based it on man-made features I knew were there, but also took a look at the orienteering map for the area, to see what that looked like - a lot more geographic features, like cliffs, copses and gullies, with occasional path junctions and crossings. I could have perhaps added a few of those in too, but thought that might increase the difficulty a bit too much so stuck with more identifiable physical objects.

When the courses are made available for other Fetchies to try, maybe an option for feedback, with a difficulty rating, might come in handy?

A feedback option sounds good.

Some updates:

I've amended the first course creation page, so that if you try to create a course with no name, or forget to make a start point, it'll let you know.

The code that processes your training entries against all available courses is now in place - so you are welcome to go out and try running/walking/biking/swimming your courses. I'm still working on the code that will *display* your efforts, but I hope to get the basics in place pretty soon. The more I think about it, the more stats and mini-challenges I reckon we can get out of this :-)

About This Thread

I had an idea the other day whilst walking with Katie. A lot of Fetch games rely on randomly-placed markers to encourage you to vary your routes - but what if you could design your own virtual orienteering course? Drop a dozen or so virtual flags on the map, and then you've got a challenge for yourself and anyone else who is passing through the area.

I've built some pages that allow you to construct a course:

fetcheveryone.com/ori

There are some notes on that page ...
