I had an idea the other day whilst walking with Katie. A lot of Fetch games rely on randomly-placed markers to encourage you to vary your routes - but what if you could design your own virtual orienteering course? Drop a dozen or so virtual flags on the map, and then you've got a challenge for yourself and anyone else who is passing through the area. I've built some pages that allow you to construct a course: fetcheveryone.com/ori There are some notes on that page which I'll duplicate here: In real-life orienteering, the goal is to navigate your way around a series of fixed 'flags'. There is no set order, and no fixed route - it's all about finding the best way. The goal is to visit as many flags as you can within a fixed time; or to tick them all off as quickly as you can; or you could even try to find the shortest path. All the while you are using your navigational skills whilst on the move. Our virtual orienteering tool lets you build a course in your local area and make it public. At the moment, all you can do is build your course! Once the whole system is up and running, all you'll need to do is start a run from within 20 metres of the start flag. Start running and chase down some flags. It will all work via your GPS trace - you just have to pass within 20 metres of a flag to collect it. Complete your run by heading back to the start flag. Fetch will tell you how many flags you hit - and there'll be a variety of leaderboards to compete on. Because there are no real flags to find, it's a good idea to design your course around landmarks such as postboxes, trees, pubs etc. And the best courses give the runner various conundrums on routes e.g. whether to take a shorter tougher path, or a longer easier route. But unlike real-world orienteering, you at least get the chance to study the map in advance! For now, have fun building a course (here's an example: fetcheveryone.com/ori-course.php?id=2 ), and I'll carry on building the rest of the code! |

Most orienteering classes you do have to hit the controls in the correct order. Especially now with electronic punching. What you describe with picking your own order and getting back within a set time is called a score class. Looks interesting. I'll have a look, although is seems like one might need other Fetchies nearby to actually play. |

I've figured it out. Refresh and it should be working.
