Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

@_andy Is this something you would find useful? I think there are existing Virtual Orienteering apps and website services that I think you use? :-) G

Yep: britishorienteering.org.uk

Maprun is the one may orienteering clubs use.

Of course, the real thing is significantly better.

There are interesting studies about how not navigating and relying on electronic methods actually shrinks the hippocampus.

Will we have a 'Find a course near me' function in due course?

I don't have any Fetchies in my town to play with :( and the names of the current courses mean nothing to me.

It would be fun thing to attempt while out on trips.

Yes, I'll sort a map out soon :-)

You can still tackle your own course(s) when the mood takes you - perhaps trying a novel new route to be more efficient, or just trying to beat your previous time.

@cackleberry have a look at: clok.org.uk and eborienteers.org.uk

Thirsk area falls into EBOR territory and has been used for events (e.g. https://www.ebor.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#163) - indeed I've even run one there, but EBOR are mostly focussed around York, so CLOK might have stuff closer to you as they cover Northerallerton up to Middlesborough-ish area.

There are also a list of virtual courses on Go Orienteering, I've downloaded a couple last year for practice (some seem to have stakes, some I don't know). I can't see any in Thirsk, nearest one looks like Catterick Garrison. There are loads around Darlington which I know CLOK have uploaded/designed at least some of them.

Yes, I have friends that run for both EBOR and CLOK I've never participated in an event though.

I'd definitely encourage you to go along to one of their events if you can.

They should both do some events where they should have a focus on newcomers - although every event should have a course suitable for people who've never orienteered before.

I've not been to any low-key CLOK events, and only the odd smaller EBOR event, so not sure how they set them up.

I did two last year with CLOK. They were very helpful both beforehand and on the day.

About This Thread

Maintained by fetcheveryone
I had an idea the other day whilst walking with Katie. A lot of Fetch games rely on randomly-placed markers to encourage you to vary your routes - but what if you could design your own virtual orienteering course? Drop a dozen or so virtual flags on the map, and then you've got a challenge for yourself and anyone else who is passing through the area.

I've built some pages that allow you to construct a course:

fetcheveryone.com/ori

There are some notes on that page ...
