Compared to their predecessors (ie. the Leadville in all its guises) they're pretty good on wet terrain Ros, the vibram sole wears well and is not bad on wet rock. My problem with the Hierro is that they do become waterlogged and a bit heavy as a consequence, hence my thinking they're a dry weather shoe. If I was doing another of the UTMB races, this would be my go-to shoe without question*

* which is a bit silly of me, when I did the full UTMB it pissed it down for the first 10 hours :-)

to be fair, even mudclaws and xtalons have been no match for the mud we've had around here recently.

I'm keeping an eye out for a pair in the sales to have a spare, but these feel like they should do a fair few miles. Need to take them somewhere rocky soon.

Reminds me too - I've also got a pile of hardly worn inov-8s that really need to go on ebay.

Never tried the Hierro, so will have a look. My default ultra show these days is the trailroc 230. Used them for everything from L100 to road marathons. Absolutely no grip in mud, and I descended from The Kops to Haweswater on my arse last time!

Roclite 290s might be an option for the future.

I'm trying a pair of Roclite 275s at the moment, unusually supportive for Inov8.

I've also been trying some of their Boomerang insoles in a pair of Ultra 260s and they work surprisingly well.

I thought the x-talon ultra 260 would be my default shoe, but they're not very forgiving on the tarmac between trailly bits, I'm wondering if putting Boomerangs in would help. I have some Enertor insoles, will try those first - thanks NE :)

I have a pair of the Roclite 275s still in their box,

I have too many shoes, also thinking of Ebay-ing or Fetch-selling some barely worn pairs I didn't get on with.

I ran loops (circa 5-7m) from home today for my long run which meant I could call in for loo stops and food & drinks. Worked well but loop 3 I extended to 9m, nipped in briefly then rounded up for the week.

I didnt stop the clock to gauge an idea on how long this run might take but happy at my pacing (you can see where the hills were 😂)

I got really bad stomach cramps at 19ish m, presuming not enough fuel, with extending loop 3 I didnt have anything after 11m other than sweets.

All good lessons and def the way to get the long miles in safely.

*stalker alert* - that's a long long run gg, when was the last time you went over 20?
I'd like to extend my runs out that far now, but I'm terrified of building up too quickly and big jumps

Great run gg! For my 50ks last week I had a 25k loop! I have plenty of toilet stops on the seafront but do use home for snacks or to top up my squash bottle!
