Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any trail shoes recommendations? I've run in Hoka Speedgoats for a number of years, but the latest version (4) are causing me no end of grief and as such think I need to look for something else.

I've got a few off-road marathons and ultras booked for the summer - in theory road shoes might be alright but guess I need a back up plan in case it rains for a week beforehand.

Comfort is probably top priority. Appreciate this is a very personal and opinionated area, but just looking for experiences of various brands if possible as I go back to the drawing board.

Quite taken by INOV8 if anyone has particular experience of them? (if anyone knows of any bargains that would also be great! 😂)

I do pretty much all my running in Inov-8 Roclites (including some big off road ultras). I find they give a good balance between being reasonably grippy on the trails, but okay on the road bits also. Usually get mine from sportsshoes.com - just need to time it right for when they get the not-quite-latest colours. Don't think I've ever paid more than £65 for a pair. I'm on my 8th pair! And they've lasted anything from 850 to 1,800 miles.

Ironically, I have just moved from Brooks Cascadia to Hoka Speedgoat. I’ve never run in Hokas before & live them. However, my switch wasn’t due to any dissatisfaction with the Cascadias. I’ve had 4 pairs & they are great for training & racing on the trails. I just fancied a change

Thanks.

For inov8 - sizing same with your other shoes?

For speedgoats, absolutely loved and did many happy miles in Vn 2. Got Vn 4 before Christmas and putting them on, just didn't feel right. Everytime I've worn them I've had calf and arch pain within a mile that never goes. Sad, as I say, loved Vn 2.

Have a look to see if your road shoes have a trail version. I used the Mizuno trail shoes quite successfully. Knew they would fit well

I used inov8 for heavy mud and lumpy trails. They are a similar size (I usually buy a size up from regular shoes)

I take half a size larger in Inov-8 than normal shoes (9.5 vs 9)

10.5 for me in Inov-8 (and Walsh) but 10 in non-running shoes

I use half a size smaller in Inov8 than I do in Hoka, but I know others that use same size.

They seem to have re-stocked on the EVO Speedgoat, which is the slightly lighter version ( different upper, midsole & outsole the same ). It was based on v2 I think. The downside is it's more expensive.

If it's more a road/trail hybrid you're looking for then I've had great service from Hoka Challenger ATRs ( had v1, v2, v4 and now on v5 ). Definitely more room in the toebox than the Speedgoat, and they're great on roads, I do my marathon training long road runs using them

Thanks all. Run in Hoka Cliftons for road shoes.

Gus - atrs jumped to mind as something to try.

Think I'll keep an eye out for the atrs or inov8 and plump for one when the price is right. No rush - either that or I'll be the one slipping and sliding everywhere in June in road shoes!
