Tha is so much all I think what piqued my j treat was the suggestion they may help later in the run when I’m tired & it may be dark. I know I’d need to practice with them but neither of the ultras I’ve got have that much elevation the one this year starts higher drops then seems pretty level (rolling) so it was whether it would be worth the money / weight to have them just in case. (& why I asked as it’s easy to get carried away thinking you need stuff that you many not need)

Poles still not permitted in uk permitted races I don't think. Mandatory in (some?) French ultras? Go figure. Never used em but understand very helpful on reducing leg fatigue in v holly routes. You'd def want to practice with them tho, presumably? G

Poles are perfectly acceptable in most TRA permitted races (who permit trail races for UKA in England and Wales). I know Scottish Athletics has taken a different line with it's permitted races. I've never seen a race anywhere that makes them mandatory.
The big saving on leg fatigue is actually when climbing if you use them correctly, which does of course mean you're legs are fresher for descending.

Ah, sorry ff, I thought UTMB they were mandatory, not just advised.
And yes, I was thinking of SA events (as I'm in Scotland) and assumed UKA and SA were same rules. So wrong twice! G

There was a Q on the group about poles and they confirmed they were allowed.
I had never thought about them but you know what it’s like people talk about them and I started to think are they helpful. As it’s not hilly I may leave it for this race but as you need to learn to use them and then practice with them maybe it’s something I look at as I would like to start doing more fell running when life resumes I’m sure some running club ultra runners use them.

Piles not allowed in fell races I think. Certainly not popular although I fancy trying them as Burnsall one year

I've never quite understood the attitude of poles being "cheat sticks" in the UK, certainly I would expect to see them at almost any trail race in the EU.
Personally, I like them for climbing and for when I am hiking sections, but in general for anything flat I wouldn't bother. I've done 100 mile races where they would have been more hassle than anything, and others where they pretty much essential...

DT I thought that about poles (and even piles 😉) in fell races but the FRA Competition Rules make no mention of them at all, so I suspect it's down to the individual race. For most fell races they would just be a waste of time. However even though I wouldn't because it's far too runnable I could see people using them in a race like the Hobble?

I'm going to practice some more with mine and carry them for the L50 - because they could be useful if my always-a-bit-dodgy knee plays up or if, when tired, I need a bit of extra help balancing on rocky downhills. It's the finding somewhere suitable to practice that is the problem at the moment.
